Thousands of DeKalb County residents will see a slight drop in their power bill come January.

Rates for Tennessee Valley Authority residential customers will drop between $1 and $3 in the billing period that starts Jan. 1 due to another reduction in fuel costs. This will result in cost drops for customers of both the Fort Payne Improvement Authority and the Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative.

When TVA decreases their rates, we decrease our rates too, said Danny Brisendine, general manager for FPIA, which provides power to about 8,400 customers in Fort Payne.

Mike Simpson, general manager for the Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative, said the savings would be passed on to SMECs customers as well. The cooperative currently provides power to more than 31,000 customers throughout DeKalb County.

We always mirror TVAs rates, Simpson said. If there is an increase, thats passed on but if there is a reduction we feel that should be passed on, too.

Rates for the change reflects more hydroelectric generation because of rain and a reduction in projected future costs.

TVA began the fiscal year Oct. 1 with an 8 percent general rate increase but because of reduced fuel adjustment costs, customers are still paying less than a year ago.

There have been five drops in the fuel cost adjustment cost this year.

TVA uses the fuel cost adjustment to help recover fluctuating fuel and purchased power costs.

TVA is the nations largest public utility with nearly 9 million customers in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.
