Some Fast Facts About Alabama Health Insurance

Alabama is perhaps one of the few states that invest heavily in its healthcare system. If it is any indication, state governor Bob Riley has even proposed giving tax breaks to small businesses that provide their employees a health insurance plan.

But there are some facts about Alabama health insurance that you should know:

· The price is the same.

All plans by the same provider will have the same price regardless if they are selling it to you from Birmingham or from Montgomery. It doesn't matter too if your health insurance plan is being sold to you by your favorite insurance agent or by the insurance provider, the price of the premium should be the same. The law prohibits insurance carriers from undercutting the price of their health insurance plans.

· Most don't understand.

It's not really surprising that most people in Alabama, and the rest of the United States for that matter, do not really understand, the health insurance policies they bought. This ultimately comes from then not reading up on their health insurance plan's literature.

· They are not guaranteed issue.

Just like in any other state, Alabama health insurance plans are not guaranteed issue, meaning your pre-existing conditions might not be covered. Unless you are enrolling under a group plan, do not expect your health insurance company to look beyond your pre-existing conditions and just go right ahead and approve your application. There is no law in Alabama penalizing companies that do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Do not even think about lying. If you have doubts about your so-called insurability, then go ahead and ask us.

· There are choices.

Just like in any other state, in Alabama, you can have a choice of an HMO plan or a PPO plan. And it does pay to be employed in a fairly large company. Under the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973, companies with 25 or more employees are required to offer HMO options to their employees.

If HMO's are not your fancy, there are always PPO plans, and you can get discounts for your medical services.

· The dental plans have more options

Of all the medical services available in the market today, insurance providers seem to place a premium, and offer more choices on dental healthcare. This is true in all states of the United States and not just in Alabama.

There are PPO dental plans, HMO dental plans, and discount dental plans. Of the three, it is the dental discount plans that offer the most value for your money.

Just do the math. With discount dental plans or reduced fee dental plans, you can get a 50% to 60% discount on your dental health bills just by paying $9 per month. Dental discount plans thus far are the most cost saving plans that have ever come out of the health insurance industry. The good thing about it is that in many cases, the major carriers of dental insurance offer these plans, hence, they are perfectly legitimate.
