Alabama Hunting License Requirements
Alabama requires that both hunters and fishermen obtain licenses. Residents can purchase licenses for hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. You can purchase a license online at outdooralabama.com or by calling 1-888-848-6887. Hunting and fishing licenses are also available throughout the state at sport or bait shops. Regardless of where you decide to purchase your license, you must meet certain eligibility requirements.
Residency & Social Security
To be eligible for in-state license pricing, you must be able to prove to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that you are an Alabama resident. You must have an Alabama driver's license and have lived in the state at least 90 days. If you do not have a driver's license, you are permitted to use a state-issued ID card. You can also present two of the following documents to the licensing commissioner:
School registration if you are age 16 or younger
Voter registration
Tax return form from previous year
Proof of Alabama employment
Health insurance documents
Home property tax documents
Utility bills from the last three months
It is important to note that, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, hunting licenses cannot be approved if you do not have a valid Social Security number.
Members of the Military
If you are a member of the U.S. military you can be exempt from the Alabama residency requirements if you meet other criteria. If you do not have a valid Alabama driver's license, you must have one of two other documents: 1) military orders showing that you are stationed in Alabama or 2) military files showing that Alabama is your state of residence. If you have a spouse or any dependents who also plan to obtain a Alabama resident hunting license, they must possess an Alabama driver's license or have documentation they have lived in the state for at least 90 days.
Hunting Education
You are required by law to complete a hunting education program before you can be licensed to hunt in Alabama. This program will expose you to a variety of hunting topics, including wildlife laws, hunter responsibility, firearms safety, survival skills and first aid. Personnel from the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries teach the 10-hour course. You also have the option of completing the program online, but a field day of in-person training will still be required. You can search for hunting education course dates at https://huntered.dcnr.alabama.gov/public/. The internet course is available at beasafehunter.org/.
You can still get a hunting license if you do not complete the education program if you are accompanied by an Alabama licensed hunter age 21 or older. Your license will reflect your supervision-required status.
You are exempt from these hunting education or supervision requirements if you meet one of the following criteria:
You were born before August 1, 1977
Member of the U.S. National Guard
Active member of the U.S. military
Certified law enforcement officer employed by the state
