You went through all the trouble getting the Certificate of Good standing legalized with an apostille and when you present in the bank in Bangladesh they go “huh?” and reject the document? Well, no wonder. Bangladesh is one of those countries who did not sign the Hague Convention of 1961 on Legalization, therefore, Apostilleis just a fancy paper to them. You should have mentioned that when you just started the legalization process (instead of mumbling something like “Ugh…Canada”) not when you though you are ready to open that Bank account for the Representative Office.

So, what to do now? What do they accept?

First of all, you will have to start from the very beginning. Get the Certificate and Request a Foreign Certification/Authentication for use in Bangladesh. (This is just an example. When someone asks you about the target country when you legalizing the document, they do it for a reason. To determine which process you need to undergo, not just because they are bored and curious.)

Once the certification was attached to the document it is time to check with the target authorities to determine the next step. Some countries accept State level legalization some require federal before you can present the document to the embassy/consulate for further authentication. Also, make sure the consulate you plan to visit is actually have the jurisdiction over the state in which the document was issued.

Sounds like a lot of work? That’s because it is! And no this isn’t only so difficult in the United States, the procedure is the same anywhere you go. (Or very similar, with different authorities designated to perform each particular action)
